What's Growing On...Now?
Halloween Pumpkins
Monday 31 October

What a glow!

Last year in 2010, it seemed most of the neighbourhood
had gone out and bought a pumpkin,
this year you have surpassed expectations
and put on a fangtastic display!

It was all for fun...
though a prize was awarded for the ‘best’ in the road.

It was great to see everyone getting involved – residents, families and students.

There is now quite a scarey pile of pumpkins shown on the
Lansdown Rd BS6 Facebook,
so do look to see if you can spot yours and

Below are those who took and winner’s rosette in 2011.

It was really, really difficult to choose, as the pumpkins were ALL superb.
Decisions as last year, were made on originality, fun and being aglow.

Some residents have expressed a desire to start a commnunity garden...

In June 2008 some on Lansdown Rd saw an article in the Bristol Metro newspaper about growing “your own grub”. After a chat over the garden fence, it was wondered if others would like to. So an invitation was sent out to the street to join in the discussion on the merits of the idea.

One year on, we have some true garden converts. Previously neglected garden spaces have become bountiful and beautiful. No one is an expert, in fact, no one is in charge. Each garden is tended by the resident to grow whatever they wish. The difference being the willingness to share experience, plants, seeds and enthusiasm.

Since then, we have a fine crop of tomatoes. But also growing are lettuce, carrots, courgettes, beans, rocket, sweetcorn, peppers and herbs. Many have realised the whole process of planting and caring for the crop is really fun and easy.

Since then, we have hosted two Sunflower growing competitions.

Since then, we have held a number of informal ‘what’s growing on?’ sessions held on the road. These are just an excuse to giveaway plants, seeds and share some knowledge. They are also a great way to meet your neighbours!

If we had an aim or agenda, it would probably be to encourage more residents to have a go at planting things to create a vibrant, green street. Everyone can have a go, even growing salad cress on a damp paper towel on a window sill, it really is that simple!
