Belinda Kirk
On 1st June 2010, "4 ordinary women in a 24ft rowing boat will take on the mighty task of rowing around Great Britain non-stop and completely un-aided",
so said their blog.

Read all about The Seagals as they complete their epic journey
aboard 'Go Commando'.

Well, these '4 ordinary woman' are being led by Belinda Kirk, up until recently, a resident of Lansdown Rd.

This is by no means the first adventure Belinda has involved with. In fact, busy Belinda has been on 12 major international expeditions in the last 15 years. From tackling China's Desert of Death to leading a 100 strong team to the Amazon.

As a TV director, she has worked on 'Ray Mears Bushcraft', 'SAS Are You Tough Enough', 'Hunting Chris Ryan', 'Coast', 'Monsters We Met', 'Living With Gorillas' and 'Beyond Boundaries I & II'.

...and if that is not enough, Belinda is also the Founder of Bristol Explorers - Connecting the Expedition & Adventure Community!

The Ultimate Player
Did you know that recently Lansdown Rd was the home to a European Gold Medal Winner and current member of the national GB Mixed Team? The person is Georgie Winborn and her sport is known as Ultimate but is probably better recognised as Ultimate Frisbee.

Georgie Winborn
Georgie started playing whilst studying at Edinburgh University. Before long she also joined the Swift Women’s Team, so leading to her place on Scotland’s Mixed Team.

This was the beginning of her international playing career. She has competed in the World Ultimate Beach Championships, Portugal, and shared the GB Team glory as the gold medal Winners at the European Ultimate Championships, Southampton (2007).

She represented Britain again in the 2008 World Championships in Vancouver.

The 2009 outdoor playing season is over for now but this sport is never far from Georgie’s mind as presently, she is a Member of the Board of Directors for the UK Ultimate Association (UKUA). Though Georgie has moved from Lansdown Rd but we wish her well for next season. To find out more about the sport of Ultimate Frisbee click here www.ukultimate.com

Ultimate Frisbee
How do you play it?
All you need are 14 players - seven aside
A disc – 285mm diameter, 175gms weight
A pitch – approximately 100x40 meters
8 markers to indicate the end zones
No referees required!

Scroll down for the rules
ultimate frisbee pitch
The overall rules are straightforward
A match is played to 15 points or 90 minutes. To score a point, a pass must be successfully completed from the main pitch into their opponent’s end zone.

As in netball, the passer cannot move from their position when in possession of the disc. Passes are made to a team mate running into a space down the pitch.

Naturally the defending team tries to prevent successful passing and to gain possession for themselves. This is a non contact sport with no referee, relying more on fair play.

A physical team game suitable for single sex or mixed teams.

Bristol University has an Ultimate Sports Club but there are several teams based around the city. Check them out on the internet or find out more about the sport of Ultimate Frisbee by clicking here www.ukultimate.com
